"Holly and Ivy"- The Napoleonic Wars are over. Troops are returning home to a joyous Christmas, except for Surgeon Jake Frost, who must escort a hypochondriac captain, barely wounded at Waterloo. Jake prepares to hate every minute of the ordeal, until he meets the hypochondriac's fiancé.

"Yours Sincerely" - Madeline and her widowed mother live in genteel poverty, at the mercy of overbearing in-laws. Despite this, they have managed well. Years earlier, they befriended an older gentleman who has since passed away. To their surprise, an American sea captain arrives, summoned for a reading of the will of that quiet gentleman. Kindness triumphs in ways unimaginable, except, perhaps, during the season of glad tidings.

"Picture a Christmas" - To avoid the poorhouse, Mary Cooper finds employment in a notions shop belonging to a grouchy old dame. Coming into her life to upend this pleasant arrangement is Luke Wainwright, nephew of Mary's employer. He's a widower and shipbuilder with no time for anything except business. To Luke, Mary is an interloper in his aunt's affairs, until he sees someone else: a person as determined as he is to improve the hand dealt them. Together, perhaps?

Kelly (The Unlikely Master Genius) presents a trio of touching yuletide tales. In "Holly and Ivy," an army surgeon returns home from the Napoleonic Wars just in time for Christmas. Though he has no remaining family and no prospects, a chance meeting might bring him the most important gift of all. "Yours Sincerely" shows readers that letters are not just a window to the world; they can also be the door to one's heart. American captain Amos Foster arrives in England to find that a grandfather he never met has left him both a fortune and a friend. Finally, in "Picture a Christmas," Mary is left penniless and without a home but is determined to keep moving forward. Through heart and hard work, she may save herself, and perhaps some others, on the way. Each story is charming and chaste. Though all the tales feature sorrow and suffering, the courageous characters within find love in the end. VERDICT This book will appeal to readers seeking Regency short stories full of heartwarming holiday joy. Recommended for fans of Bronwyn Scott, Virginia Heath, and Carol Arens.--Lauren Hackert

Award-winning Kelly (The Unlikely Gun Wharf Rats, 2024) gifts readers with a trio of holiday-themed novellas in this superbly written collection. In "Holly and Ivy," after escorting the annoyingly hypochondriacal Captain George Baldwin home, British Army surgeon Jake Frost isn't quite so anxious to leave once he meets George's sweet fiance, Ivy Pritchard. "Yours, Sincerely" features seamstress Madeline Tifton, who, after helping her neighbor Walter Ince with his correspondence with his grandson, feels like she already knows the American captain Amos Foster, but the feelings Maddie has for Amos, once she meets him in person, are a complete surprise. In "Picture a Christmas," penniless Mary Cooper can't believe her luck when she secures a job working in Luella Wainwright's notions shop, but can she now convince Luella's nephew Luke that she isn't out to fleece his aunt? Each of these splendid love stories shines brightly with the true spirit and simple grace of the holiday season as well as brilliantly reflecting Kelly's dry sense of wit and thoughtful, nuanced characterization.
