Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. 텍스타일이 건축이 될 때: 스튜디오 아카네 모리야마 WHEN TEXTILES BECOME ARCHITECTURE: STUDIO AKANE MORIYAMA • 텍스타일은 건축재료가 될 수 있을까? 유연하고 가벼운 성질을 지닌 텍스타일은 견고하고 고정적인 건축의 대척점에서 오랫동안 구축의 재료로 인식되지 못했다. 건축과 텍스타일을 전공하고 텍스타일을 통해 건축·공간에 개입하는 작업을 시도해온 모리야마 아카네(스튜디오 아카네 모리야마 대표)는 텍스타일이 인테리어 요소에 머무르지 않고 건축을 이루는 또 하나의 방식이 될 수 있다고 말한다. 한 겹의 천으로, 때로는 겹겹의 천이 만드는 볼륨으로 공간에 다양한 스케일을 구현하는 모리야마에게 건축재료이자 구축 방식으로서 텍스타일의 가능성에 대해 물었다. Can textiles be a building material? Textiles of flexible and lightweight properties have long been disregarded as materials for construction at the opposite point of solid and fixed architecture. Moriyama Akane (principal, Studio Akane Moriyama), who majored in architecture and textiles, has tried to make interventions into the architecture and space through textiles, noting that textiles can be another way of constructing architecture, not just an interior element. SPACE asked Moriyama – who realise the spaces on various scales often using a single layer of fabric and sometimes a volume through layers of fabric – about the potential of textiles as a building material and the use in developing a new construction method.
