The pope's intention for September
Prayer in the morning
Gospel canticles • The gospel canticles (or “songs”) come from Luke’s gospel. In honor of the mystery of the Incarnation (to which all three refer), it is customary to make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins and to stand while it is sung.

What to do with a cross
Becoming a better servant • Pope St. Gregory the Great (c. 540–604) is usually honored on September 3. However, since that is a Sunday this year, we are providing the following excerpt from a sermon of his on Ezekiel to recognize him. Here, Gregory shares his insecurities and difficulties in following the call to serve as a “watchman” over God’s people. Even 1,400 years later, we can identify with the array of daily trials he faced. May we trust in God to help us work through our weaknesses.
Getting the math right • Find a quiet spot to read, reflect, and pray. You may record your thoughts in a prayer journal, or share your responses with others in a group.
Do-over • S. James Meyer is a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin, co-founder of StreetLights Outreach and Whatsoever You Do, Inc.
