COMPLIANT OR NOT?

Self-built Sportfisher • Fifteen-year-old Mack Lane built his own 4.5m open top fishing boat from plywood sheathed in fibreglass, with some guidance from his father, Scott Lane of Scott Lane Boatbuilders fame. Mack tells his story…

SWEET SAILING • A Kiwi connection has helped to create the newest in Beneteau’s First series, a performance cruiser designed to appeal to club racers who also want to take the family away for a comfortable cruise.

KIWI CONNECTION

A DELICATE BALANCING ACT • Designing bespoke boats can be a tricky business because it also demands skills they don’t teach in design school. A designer must be a guide, counsellor, confidant and commercial sage, with the ability to translate dreams into reality without triggering financial or emotional meltdowns. Happy ending • What a long, great trip it’s been: Massachusetts, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Panama Canal, Galápagos, Marquesas, Tuamotus, Society Islands. The final 3,000 miles may be the best yet…

Let’s go powerboat racing • Powerboat racing is often considered an elite and expensive sport, and while this may true in some countries, it is a far cry from the truth in New Zealand.

A CUSTOM STATEMENT • Kōtare is an Innovision 757 Custom that makes quite a statement – for both the owner and Innovision Boats. Housed at Westhaven’s Oram’s Marine drystack, the boat is an example of the level of customisation Innovision Boats can offer – a happy result of close collaboration between boatbuilder and client.

LUXURY AMERICAN CRUISER • Sea Ray Boats are an iconic American brand, founded in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan. Now owned by the huge Brunswick Corporation, they are part of a group that is the largest pleasure boat manufacturer in the world.
