Koe'sister

Issue 3 2021
Magazine

When shared with family and friends, food transcends beyond its textbook definition. Smells, flavours and preparation are connected to family history – passed down from one generation to the next through storytelling. Across social statuses and racial lines, every family has a recipe (or two) that they cherish. Family recipes tell a story. They connect you to people, places or memories. Koe’sister magazine goes one step further, celebrating these recipes through heritage stories.

FROM THE EDITOR

Your voices • This time around, we invited the members of the Lockdown Recipe Storytelling Book (LRSB) Facebook group to tell us of their travels. Their stories will transport you even if lockdown has us staying put.

Ode to an air fryer • Members of the Lockdown Recipe Storytelling Book (LRSB) Facebook group are ardent air fryer users. It’s no wonder then that a question about air fryers led to one of the liveliest threads on the page. Here’s what we learnt about the why and how of air fryers.

Love triangle • “Let’s talk about the samoosa. It’s not a ‘samousa’; it’s a ‘samoesa’.” With these words, Ingrid Jones, founder of the Lockdown Recipe Storytelling Book Facebook group, kickstarted a lively discussion about one of South Africa’s most beloved snacks.

FLOP-PROOF & EASY • The perfect lemon meringue

Soul food • Food and family are forever intertwined in our hearts and minds. A mother lives in a small plate of food, lovingly kept aside. An egg and Vienna sandwich tastes like a father’s constant presence.

Wanderlust & memories • Live vicariously through the nostalgic travel recollections, including the recipes picked up along the way, as shared by Koe’sister readers.
