BOAT WORLD

U-BOAT WORX THE NEXUS

AMERICA’S CUP HYDROGEN CHASE BOAT Flying high on hydrogen • ETNZ is leading hydrogen-powered marine technology, reports John Eichelsheim.

NORDIC PRIZE • Norwegian boatbuilder Marex is on to a winner with its 330 Scandinavia, as evidenced by taking out the Best of Boats Award 2021 in the category ‘Best for Family’ and European Boat of the Year 2022 at Dusseldorf. Best of Boats is the largest annual award for motorboats in Europe.

EWINCHER READER’S CHOICE FAVOURITE ANCHORAGES • Boating NZ readers were asked to share their favourite anchorages with us, accompanied by a photo if possible, and explain why they liked it so much.

Doctor’s orders • Alex Stone meets the little boat that could – and its remarkable designer and builder – in Akaroa.

SURVIVING ATA • In 1964 six schoolboys survived 15 months on a remote, uninhabited island. The southernmost in Tonga, it is no tropical paradise…

THE GOLDEN BOYS • Blair Tuke still remembers the first time he saw his name etched on the inside of a beer bottle cap.

BOAT BLING

A popping little cockle • With the sudden reappearance of a little clinker runabout last seen working around Picton Harbour nearly 30 years ago, older locals can be forgiven for thinking they’ve been through a time-warp.

FIERCE FLYER • Painted in a striking metallic Brisbane Blue from Superyacht Coatings, this distinctive looking trailerboat is a bold and beautiful sight. An updated version of the Innovision 616 Explorer, she was delivered to her new owner in mid-April, just a fortnight before this review, having been built to order in the Innovation workshop in Albany, Auckland.

RAISING DIVECAT – PART 1 Loss, relocation and salvage planning • Most people would cut their losses if their boat sank in 43 metres of water, but Norman’s not most people. He was determined to salvage his boat himself.

ONE FAMILY’S BOATING JOURNEY Kitset water solution • I’m writing this article during the 2022 April school holidays while anchored at Great Barrier Island, our newly favourite sailing homeaway-from-home.

BOAT BUSINESS

BOAT BUSINESS

Dynamic trim • After a Covid-induced hiatus of three years Advance Trident Limited (ATL) welcomed Zipwake’s Patric Nilsson to New Zealand for the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show.

BASIC IS BEST • “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” – Leonardo Da Vinci. A simple boat can mean basic; more rarely it can mean a boat where functionality has been achieved through careful thought, attention to detail and hidden sophistication. Ourtestboat, Haumanu, is a perfect example of the latter.

Parking in-between • This edition is about parking between parallel finger docks with the wind blowing you in. In many drystack berths, it is not essential to reverse into the berth unless you need to for disembarking the vessel. Coming in forwards is always the easiest in this situation.

Through a vintage lens • Auckland’s Maritime Museum hosts an unusual photographic exhibition this month – a collection of images reflecting last year’s America’s Cup in Auckland – but captured with century-old technology.

More fish in the sea • Why aren’t we doing more to breed and release native fish? A simple question with complicated answers. Alex Stone looks at some of the issues surrounding marine species re-introductions.

GROW YOUR OWN FLOATING GARDEN • The days when sailors had to survive on a diet of salted pork and ship’s biscuits while scurvy loosened their teeth are long gone, but many cruisers...
