HOW RAIL CRASH-LAND ED OVER AIR SERVICES

CALL ATTENTION

THE 1963 CARLISLE RAILTOUR 1X85 • In the first instalment of a two-part review, Ron Herbert describes in detail one of the best-organised railtours he ever experienced, around the Carlisle area in 1963 – hauled by no less than NBR 4-4-0 No. 256 Glen Douglas.

NIGHT AND DAY – BY GEORGE! • Chris Leigh presents a glimpse of the photography of a great artist and his camera

SIGNALLING A CHANGE IN DIRECTION • What were two 14-year-old schoolboys doing helping work a busy signalbox in the East Midlands during the early 1960s? Neil Vann shares some anecdotal recollections of his illicit visits to mechanical boxes in the Nottinghamshire/Derby coalfield. Part 1

MY QUEST FOR GRAND PARADE’S NAMEPLATE • An expert on railway relics who once worked for BR at Sleaford, the late David Love described how he acquired a nameplate from what was effectively the last ‘A3’ built, the ill-fated Grand Parade.

GREAT SHOT

PLATFORM • send your letters to Steam World, 4 Milnyard Square, Orton South gate, Peterborough PE2 6GX or steamworld@choicemag.co.uk

STEAM WORLD CROSSWORD

DERBY LOCOMOTIVE WORKS VISIT – PART 2 • This fascinating original document was created in 1948 by the late historian Vic Forster and was discovered in the very large collection of historical papers gifted to Steam World by our late Historical Consultant Richard Strange. Part one appeared in the May 2022 issue of Steam World and was introduced by Nigel Harris.

PICK ‘N’ MIX • Chris Leigh’s random selection of colour photographs is a bit of a rounding off exercise for some recent Steam World features.

B&CDR: ‘ONE OF GWR’S LONGEST BRANCHES’ • It cut through the very heart of the Cotswolds from the market town of Chipping Norton, south and west to Cheltenham. Chris Leigh looks back at the Banbury-Cheltenham line.

COPPER-CAPPED DAYS OF EXILE • The trainspotting exploits of Manchester lad Stan Price were helped by the fact that his two uncles were a driver and Chief Clerk at Westbury MPD. Thanks to them, he was able to ’cop’ every ‘King’ and most of the ‘Castles’.
