BOATS OF THE FUTURE • Next-generation technology has opened the door to unprecedented advances in marine electronics and engineering, bringing boaties greater safety and convenience than ever. Whether you’re looking to upgrade old gear or add allnew capabilities, you’ll find plenty of choice this coming year.

IT’S A GIVEN • When boatbuilder Bob Huntington decided to build a catamaran for himself and wife Judy to voyage offshore, there was only one designer on his short list – Ron Given. This latest collaboration between designer and boatbuilder has produced an absolute gem of an offshore catamaran, the 14.5m Katoa.

The big lift • Last month’s article featured Norman’s ultimately successful effort to locate Divecat, his 12m aluminium catamaran lost in 43m of water in the Firth of Thames, and his ingenious plan for lifting her. This issue, the salvage effort gets underway.

Current favourites • Oceanic currents, temperature breaks, structure and concentrations of baitfish are key factors when searching for pelagic gamefish.

Reverse docking • This month: a cheat for when you are struggling to come alongside a dock bow-first because it’s a tight space and the wind is blowing you away.

UH-OH–BILGE ALARM! • Wet bilges may have been acceptable back in the olden days when everything from the galley sink to the fridge drain emptied into the (smelly) bilge – the mess was simply pumped out regularly – but standards have changed, environmental issues must now be considered, and most boat owners nowadays want a dry bilge.
