Parables and journeys
The pope’s intention for September
Prayer in the morning
Gospel canticles • The gospel canticles (or “songs”) come from Luke’s gospel. In honor of the mystery of the Incarnation (to which all three refer), it is customary to make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins and to stand while it is sung.

What to do with a cross
The Lord is with us always • St. John Chrysostom (347-407), whose memorial we celebrate on September 13, was trained as an orator, lived for a time with hermits, and then became a priest and archbishop of Constantinople. He wrote scriptural commentaries, treatises, and many letters. But his real talent shines through in his homilies, for which he became famous and was called Chrysostomos (the “golden mouth”). This excerpt from one of his homilies shares his confidence in Jesus to help him overcome all hardship.
Sometimes people are good • Find a quiet spot to read, reflect, and pray. You may record your thoughts in a prayer journal, or share your responses with others in a group.
The Light of Evening • Gunilla Norris, well-known spiritual author, reflects on growing old in her brand new book, The Light of Evening: Meditations on Growing in Old Age. Our excerpt begins as the author writes about the value of truly being awake.
