Gospel canticles • The gospel canticles (or “songs”) come from Luke's gospel. In honor of the mystery of the Incarnation (to which all three refer), it is customary to make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins and to stand while it is sung.

The royal road • Thomas á Kempis (c. 1380-1471), born in Germany, entered a monastery at age 19, where he was ordained a priest and spent the rest of his life. Elected twice as sub-prior, Thomas wrote many treatises for training the novices, and he is remembered as a prolific copyist and writer. These excerpts from The Imitation of Christ invite us to recommit ourselves to taking up the cross with Christ.
