The power of our words

Holy Week 2023

Easter Sunday

A reading plan: Holy Week with Matthew • At Gethsemane, Jesus asked his sleepy disciples, “Could you not watch one hour with me?” This Holy Week, set aside some time each day to be with Jesus as Matthew reveals his understanding of the mystery of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Find a quiet place and time to read and pray with the following passages.

Let the song of our journey rise like incense • In fulfillment of prophecy (Isaiah 62:11; Zechariah 9:9), Jesus entered Jerusalem, riding on a colt. The crowds lined the street, placing their cloaks and palm branches on his path. They praised God with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Psalm 118:25-26). Some of the religious leaders demanded that Jesus silence the crowd, but he responded that even if the crowd were silent, the stones would cry out. As we walk the via crucis (“way of the cross”) with Jesus this Holy Week, we are invited to discover anew our own voices. Let us not be silent!

This is the day that the Lord has made • St. Gregory (c. 330-c. 395) was the bishop of Nyssa and a great preacher, teacher, and writer. While his brother, St. Basil, gave Eastern monasticism its organization, Gregory provided its heart and mystical vision. He is known as the “Father of Mysticism.” This Easter sermon shares his conceptualization of the resurrection happening on the eighth day, the beginning of a new creation.

The sin of Holy Week

Year A: Matthew's passion account • The core and climax of each gospel account is the passion narrative. Each gospel writer shaped his account to help his community deal with the paradox of the cross and the surprise of resurrection. Each passion account reflects the unique perspective and theology of the gospel writer, who connects a portrait of Jesus in his ministry with the reasons for his suffering and death.

The magnificent sign • Find a quiet spot to read, reflect, and pray. You may record your thoughts in a prayer journal, or share your responses with others in a group.

Did Jesus really exist? • NIKOLAAS SINTOBIN, S.J., offers readers of his latest book answers to some of the most interesting everyday questions that people ask about their faith. In Did Jesus Really Exist?: and 51 Other Faith Questions, readers will get answers to questions like “What do people do in heaven?” Or, “Is God a judge who condemns?” Each answer is followed by two questions for readers to work on individually or with others.
