NZ Hunter

AWORD FROM THE EDITOR • The bloody weather! That is how I started my last editorial, but little did I know what was to happen a couple of weeks later would make the North Island summer so far pale into insignificance

CYCLONE GABRIELLE PUKETAPU 2023

ROYALS OF THE ROAR • Southern Alps, mature Red stags and time were the key ingredients for a trip Harry Graham-Samson and I had planned for the start of April 2022

CALLING ALL SIKA • Without a doubt the main event on any Sika hunter's calendar would have to be the roar.

THIRD TIME LUCKY • This story starts on April 7th 2021, when Joel Fraser and I headed to Kime Hut in the Southern Tararuas for another much anticipated roar trip

BEAUTY BUCK • It all began a month before the actual hunt. A mate came down for the weekend and after getting all excited talking about hunting, we went out for a sneaky evening shot and managed to find a spiker that was a bit slower than we were

Déjá Vu • The roar. It has to be the most anticipated few weeks on the hunting calendar

NAVIGATION WITH MAP AND COMPASS THINGS A HUNTER MUST KNOW PART TWO • Is this skill still relevant? In today's digital age of the GPS and smartphone, the skill of navigating using a map and compass has been somewhat lost by hunters. However, it does remain the most reliable and dependable way of finding your way around the back country.

WANTED • RewaRd will be paid foR the captuRe of a “GUN SPECIALIST”

TWO UREWERA TWELVES

CODE OF SILENCE • Us humans are a noisy lot. In our day-to-day life, the sounds around us and those we generate can almost make us immune to what is truly quiet

WAPITI MAHI THE SQUEAKY WHEEL • Times have changed, and our hunting organisations must be run just like any other modern business.

BUBBLE CREEK TAHR BALLOT BLOCKS • Bubble Creek is the furthest landing site up the Landsborough Valley, with the camp sitting at just shy of 1000m above sea level

DUNNS HUT • Dunns Creek Hut is a cute little four-bunker located at around 700m in a picturesque side valley of the Taipo River in Central Westland

GAME ANIMALS OF NEW ZEALAND SIKA DEER

SOUTH PACIFIC HELICOPTERS • South Pacific Helicopters is a large outfit based in Kaikoura, Marlborough. Owned by Dan and Monique Stevenson, it is a professional operation with a wide range of experiences available

NEMO TRACKER 2P TENT • Nemo Equipment is an American adventure brand, but one we haven't seen much of in NZ

Photo Gallery • The winning photo receives a Hunting & Fishing voucher to the value of $100. Send all your photos to editor@nzhunter.co.nz

THE GAC UPDATE • Police must get licence fees balance right

I'VE CAUGHT THE BUG • It's happened, I've caught the waterfowling bug.

BUILT NOT BOUGHT • We all like to hunt in our own ways for various reasons. I get a huge amount of satisfaction out of hunting over or with gear that I have made myself.

SOUTHLAND DUCK BREAST WITH A CREAMY WILD MUSHROOM AND BRANDY SAUCE • I'm not sure about you but this year seems to have gone by a lot quicker than previous ones
