Artdoc Photography Magazine

#3 2023
Magazine

Artdoc is an international digital magazine dedicated to the world of photography. The name Artdoc refers to our vision of art photography and documentary photography. The two fields have merged, and contemporary photography is a blend of both. Artdoc brings photography as the visual storytelling medium of our time. Artdoc Photography Magazine publishes engaging and high-quality portfolios of established and emerging photographers. Moreover, Artdoc publishes critical essays about the theory of photography.

Enigma of Life

Enigmatic Mirrors • The figure in the landscape forms an enigmatic puzzle. But what if you photograph yourself manifold times in different locations and with distinct postures? Finnish artist Elina Brotherus uses herself as the vehicle for her extensive portfolio of artworks, creating a mystery of hidden meanings and simultaneously using the concept as a joyful playground. “I don’t want to be in the tiny box of photography. I am a full-blooded artist. I think visually, not verbally. Once the picture is made, we can add layers of narration, interpretation, and different readings. That’s only additional but not essential for me.”

Gravity Fields

Photo Basel 2023 • photo basel is Switzerland’s first and only international art fair dedicated to photography based art. photo basel brings together galleries from around the world in a unique, authentic setting and sees itself as an integrative and hybrid platform that connects all actors of the art world (online and IRL). As a fair, we want to actively contribute to this dialogue and make art photography even more accessible. To achieve this, photo basel has put together a varied supporting program alongside 39 international galleries for this year’s edition.

The Inner Garden

Magic red mountains • In his landscapes, we see reddish colours where we expect the colour green of the leaves which creates a sense of alienation. But the goal of South African photographer Zak van Biljon, now living in Switzerland, is to make us conscious of the biological function of nature. He used a near-infrared technique, which reverses the colours in his landscapes. The natural scenes reconnect him with the abundant wildlife of his homeland. “I missed the wild nature of Africa and only realised it over time. Probably, I started to seek it out again.”

Afterlife

Poetry of Being

Enigma of reality • The portraits of the Strangely Familiar series of Michal Chelbin are aesthetic and enigmatic. The beauty of the light, colours, composition, and gazes of the young people invite the spectator to delve into the picture. A deeper investigation reveals an uncanny psychological depth. What do the subjects in the portraits hide? “I want the picture to be very aesthetic. I invite people to look at the picture, asking them to deal with something uneasy inside the frame. It’s an aesthetic trap.”
