Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. 경계를 넓히고 흐름을 만드는: 유현준 Expanding Boundaries and Creating Flow: Hyunjoon Yoo • 유현준(홍익대학교 교수)의 건축은 명확한 주제를 가진 문장처럼 직조된다. 사람이 사람과 혹은 자연과 어떤 관계를 맺을지 고민하고 벽과 기둥, 창과 문, 계단과 발코니, 테라스와 마당 같은 요소의 앙상블을 통해 공간을 완성한다. 집, 학교, 사무실 어디서든 막힘없이 이동하는 흐름을 유도하고, 사용자가 외기를 접할 수 있는 경계 영역을 고집스레 만드는 것도 같은 이치다. 유현준의 근작에서 구성과 배치의 반동적 특성을 읽어낸 백진(서울대학교 교수)은 경제적 논리나 이념의 속박에서 벗어나, 다양한 관계 맺기와 상호작용을 통해 성취될 공동의 미래로 우리의 시선을 이끈다. The architecture of Hyunjoon Yoo (professor, Hongik University) is crafted like a sentence on a specific theme. While reflecting on relationships between individuals and between humans and nature, Yoo fills up spaces with an ensemble of elements such as walls, pillars, windows, doors, staircases, balconies, terraces, and yards. A similar logic follows in the way he creates uninterrupted flows in homes, schools, and offices while stubbornly insisting on boundaried spaces so that users may engage with the exterior environment. Recognising this unique reactionary property in terms of the nature of configuration and arrangement in Yoo's recent works, Baek Jin (professor, Seoul National University) appeals to us to go beyond the restrains of economy and ideology and to look forward to a collective future that is to be realised via the bonds of new relationships and mutual interactions.
