Artdoc Photography Magazine

#4 2024
Magazine

Artdoc is an international digital magazine dedicated to the world of photography. The name Artdoc refers to our vision of art photography and documentary photography. The two fields have merged, and contemporary photography is a blend of both. Artdoc brings photography as the visual storytelling medium of our time. Artdoc Photography Magazine publishes engaging and high-quality portfolios of established and emerging photographers. Moreover, Artdoc publishes critical essays about the theory of photography.

Expressive Nature

The Song of Trees • The Song of Trees is Julia Casesnoves's project that centres around trees as the main subject, exploring them as connectors within nature. Developed in city parks, the project reflects a contemplative practice influenced by Ecological Aesthetics. It emphasises the interconnectedness of living beings, inviting a deeper understanding of the relationships that create beauty and life itself.

Under the colored sky

The desert as the stage of human fragility • The desert is one of Earth’s most rigid and unforgiving environments, characterised by extreme aridity, sparse vegetation, and harsh weather conditions. These vast, barren landscapes, which cover about one-third of the planet’s surface, are a testament to the resilience of life and humans’ fragility. Mexican photo artist Alfredo de Stefano grew up near the desert and developed a natural relationship with it. Instead of taking scenic, picturesque photographs of sand dunes, he used the desert as a stage of his performative artworks, symbolising humans’ complex relationship with nature. “Each desert offers a unique canvas for examining life’s essential truths.”

Shadowplay

Wall of Nature • Inspired by nature and sustainability, the Wall of Nature series draws from the vertical gardens in Madrid, Spain, designed by botanist Patrick Blanc. Viet Ha Tran combines colours and patterns in this lush living wall, merging art, architecture, and botany. The series combines impressionism, abstraction, and psychedelic influences to create vibrant, nature-inspired artworks.

Forests with a spiritual memory • Estranging pink colours and dripping leaves are disturbing signs of a troubled memory incorporated in the landscapes of Finnish photographer/artist Sandra Kantanen. In documentary mode, she captures images of nature, and through digital editing, she transforms them into impressionistic expressions with a Chinese touch. “I discovered the Chinese landscape and the concept of blending nature photography and landscape painting.”

Open Call The Unobserved

The duality of nature

Unter dem gleichen Himmel • Ludwig Spaude started the project Unter dem gleichen Himmel in 2023. It features photographs captured during travels across Latin America, Asia, and Europe. Inspired by childhood dreams of escaping into untouched landscapes, the images emphasise light, shadows, and fine details in black and white, creating a painting-like quality that invites personal interpretation.

The world of the subconscious • Ann Zhulan shares an experience from childhood in which she questioned her identity, leading to awareness of her existence beyond the physical body and mind. This fleeting moment of realisation inspired the creation of The World of the Subconscious series. In this project, the tree serves as an allegory for life, resilience, and the human connection to nature.

Lost paradise in surreal landscapes • Landscapes can be so overwhelming that a realistic photograph cannot express their profound experience. The London-based artist Nadia Attura looks for ways to enhance the real with painting and drawing. Her collages are surreal expressions of nature radiating the immersive experience of nature.
