How far would you go to have real freedom? To have true autonomy of both mind and body? The narrator of Failure to Comply wants self-determination at all costs, and they want you to know what it did, in fact, cost them. Their story is just a little hard to convey, as they're not entirely sure where, or even when, they are.

Set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future, this literary sci-fi novel presents a world where humans have been unshackled from disease and their basest desires thanks to the genetic engineering and societal supervision of RSCH—an inscrutable entity with unimaginable power (including the ability to literally shape reality). In RSCH's march toward perfecting the species, however, there are "deviants" (including LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities) who are fighting for a different vision of humanity. But where can they find hope when horror abounds, projected into their own bodies and minds by RSCH?

In this poetic, experimental, speculative novel, an unnamed protagonist is a deviant adrift from the regimented world of RSCH, in which there are daily weigh-ins and monitoring via implanted contacts, mandated nutritional shakes for all meals, and enforced socialization. The ideal is purity, near-transparency if possible--a blending of all individuality into a conformity and cleanliness completely divorced from the body. No deviations are allowed, but our protagonist and their good friend Reya are queer and disabled, their bodies incorrect in every way. In a world where people are encouraged to shame and report others, a world where deviants are encouraged to axe (literally) other deviants for a chance to reenter society, the two of them are unlikely to make it in their quest to survive outside of the norm. It's a powerful novel exploring disabled and queer love, connection, and possibility as well as the way tyrannies can wield language to make it violent, to turn our own minds against us. This book is perfect for readers willing to take a chance on a fragmented web of a text to dive into the protagonist's rebellious, broken memories and confused refusal to conform.
