Editor’s Journal

Quilters Companion • QC No. 110 Vol.19 No.10

Quilty Treasures

Magic Carpet Online Exhibition • A group of international textile artists, half of them Australian, got together electronically during the COVID-19 lockdown and completed a challenge entitled ‘Magic Carpet’. The finished pieces were all 50cm x 70cm (15in x 27½in), and the virtual exhibition was launched in August 2020.

Nature's Paintbox

Rachelle’s tips for preparing appliqué shapes • On each shape, begin by running a glue pen along the seam allowances that you will be turning over.

Rachelle's Quilting Community

Nature's Paintbox

Cascade • This colourful quilt features fat quarters of ombre colours and metallic flecks. A combination of diamonds, polygons, parallelograms and trapezoid shapes are utilised in the English paper piecing method.

Courthouse Steps

Deborah’s Tool Tips

Wide open spaces • Don’t be afraid of the wide open, negative spaces on a quilt. No need to panic; sit down, breathe and read on.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds • Lynelle made this quilt for her brother – who happens to be a Beatles fan - using diamond shapes made from half-square triangles. It's simple to make, and a stunning result – perhaps you have a Beatles fan that would love a new quilt?

Afternoon Tea In Melbourne • This attractive table runner and mug rug set can quickly and easily be machine-made using fused, machine applique and simple patchwork piecing.

Zahra • We all know and love Leanne’s large-sized quilts, with large-sized blocks! The traditional Double Wedding Ring takes on a whole new perspective in this up-sized quilt pattern featuring bright solid fabrics. You can either use Leanne’s specially created Ring templates, or make your own with template plastic.

Pears & Plates • This charming appliqué and pieced wallhanging appeared in Homespun magazine in April 2017 (18.04) The allure of the pretty pears and sweet birds works well with the traditional Dresden plate blocks.

Off the Shelf • Look for these great titles at your nearest book or patchwork shop.

QuiltCon Together • In past years, thousands of attendees flocked to venues to visit quilt shows. The 2021 Modern Quilt Guild show was held online as the world grapples with the impact of Covid-19. The online event included the normal components of education, quilts, shopping, and social gatherings. You can go online to see the winning quilt gallery, which includes two Australian quilters as well. The next event, QuiltCon 2022, is planned for February 17–20, presented in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mitred Borders • All borders, whether straight or mitred at the corners, should complement the centre of the quilt and add to the overall success of the design. Mitred borders are perfect for when the border fabric has a print that can be lined up for a unique look – such as strips or directional prints. Regardless of the print though, a mitred border adds an elegant finish.
