MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS 2021

Festival of Quilts (UK) • Everyone was so excited to be able to physically attend this major international quilt show! As well as a range of workshops and demonstrations, there were many quilts on display. There were 17 categories judged and we share a small selection of winners. You can see all of the winning quilts online at: www.thefestivalofquilts.co.uk

A Little Patch of Country

Christmas Tree Table Runner • There is still time to sew up this quick-and-easy table runner to brighten your Christmas festivities.

Scrappy Twin Sisters • This traditional block has a few names, including Pinwheel and Water Wheel, but whatever you call it, it is simple and makes a stunning scrap quilt.

What’s in a name? • How traditional blocks got their names

New York Beauty • New York Beauty is a name we often give this style of quilt, however it didn’t originate in New York, or even the northern area of the American continent. It was mainly a southern quilt and often called Rocky Mountain, Rising Sun, Crown of Thorns and a few other names. Its now common name, New York Beauty, came from when, in the 1920s, Mountain Mist Cotton Batting included a free pattern with its batting. Regardless of its name, this quilt was one of Deborah’s bucket list quilts. Maybe it’s on your bucket list too? It’s not for the faint-hearted, but it’s well worth the effort. Using the foundation piecing method ensures the points are accurate.

Domestic MACHINE QUILTING Curves in all the right places

Pointmore • The Dove in the Window block always works beautifully as a Christmas-themed block. Cheryl has added original appliqué designs to the traditional pieced block to create a splendid Christmas quilt. However, you can choose to use different coloured fabrics and obtain an entirely different result.

Road Test Grid Glider by Sew Steady

Milla’s Quilt • Raw-edge machine appliqué with a machine blanket stitch makes this sweet cot quilt easy to create!

Leanah • This quilt is based on a quilt made in 1857 by Leanah Markle Boucher. An American, Leanah lived from 1847–1887 and completed her quilt at the age of only 12. The original quilt features nine appliquéd blocks and measures 84in square. It was donated to the Sam Houston Park Museum in Houston, Texas, by Leanah’s great-granddaughter.

Whimsy Whidbey • Tap into your feminine side with the romantic colours and frills of this project. Adding trims is a fun way to spruce up your projects. This quilt is finished with an unusual quilt as-you-go method that makes it easy (and quick!) to do.

Off the Shelf • Look for these great titles at your nearest book or patchwork shop.

Opposites Attract • The world premiere of Opposites Attract by Studio Art Quilt Associates, was at the recent Gold Coast Stitches and Craft show. The international textile art display was originally planned to premiere at the 2020 Australasian Quilt Convention, but was held over due to the pandemic. The collection of 35 art quilts will be shown at craft events in coming months. For more details visit www.craftevents.com.au or www.saqa.com

Nature’s Paintbox Part 3 • Moving on from the first border, which was pieced in the last issue, we now cut and piece the next border.
