Quilters Companion • QC No. 125 Vol.22 No.1 JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2024

Quilty Treasures

Island Quilts 2023

Melon Slices • This traditional design is an easy project that combines machine piecing and appliqué. Marianne used colourful, quirky print fabrics from her stash. The design is based on the traditional Orange Peel block, which is cut and split for a secondary diagonal effect. Melon Slices was awarded a Judge’s Choice ribbon at the 2023 Victorian Quilters' Showcase.

Summer Oak • Capture the essence of late summer, when the deep, cooling greens of mighty oaks transition to a wondrous show of golds, umbers and rustic reds.

Machine quilting for the more artistically inclined

Kaleidoscope • The background fabric used for this quilt is Moda Bella solid called Paper Bag. The print fabrics are reproduction-style fabrics. Because of the dark shade of the background fabric, it was necessary to choose brighter print fabrics to help them stand out against the background. The quilting has been done by hand with Perle Cotton 8, in a multi-colour to help with the contrast.

Flying Scraps • During the Covid lockdowns, Tonia set herself the task of sorting a large box of scraps into useable pieces. From there, this pattern evolved.

Whitewashed • Low-volume prints, and splashes of berry, blue and green make the movement in this quilt interesting. You can make it smaller or larger by making fewer or more blocks.

Wartime Quilts Made by Men

Serendipity • A scrappy selection of Kite and Crown blocks and lace and motifs make this a very sweet quilt. It is perfect for using up fabrics from your stash. Fat eighth and fat quarter sizes are good, and you will need 50-60 pieces in total.

Festival of Quilts 2023 UK • The Festival of Quilts celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. The competition attracted more than 700 entries, all of which were hung for public viewing. Competition categories cover a wide range of quilting styles for individual quilters, groups, schools and young people, with more than $70,000 in prize money awarded. This year the event will be held August 1–4. You can join our editor, Deborah Segaert, on a special quilt tour to England, including this international quilt show – see page 12 for more information.

Get Your Stripes On • This quilt is reminiscent of Ikat carpets and is a great way to use those striped fabrics you have been collecting. Stripes often feature a range of colours within a single fabric, so they tend to go together easily. You do not want the blocks to blend together; instead, you are aiming for each block to be different and distinct from its neighbours. It’s also fun to include zigzags, plaids and dotted fabrics!

Off the Shelf • Enjoy this selection of new and recently released books on patchwork and quilting topics and techniques.

Arcadia Part 4 • In this instalment of Arcadia, you'll be adding chain units to the units you created in the last issue and assembling the centre of the quilt.
