TE AIKA WELCOMES AT TE PAE

OMC: ONEHUNGA MALL CLUB

PAUL ANSELMI • After graduating from Melbourne’s RMIT, architect Paul Anselmi worked in Europe and Asia. Six years ago, he joined Bull O’Sullivan Architecture’s newly built Lyttelton studio, where his focus has been on crafted residential and small public projects.

Transcolonisation: 1990–2020 • Anthony Hoete traces 30 years of the slow road to Te Ao Māori architecture in Aotearoa and the quest for this emergent architecture on these islands to reconcile colonial traditions and European influences with a sustained interest in the indigenous project.

Work

Ripe and bursting at the seams • Albert Refiti discusses the vitality of naming, the cross-cultural myth-histories and the moana architecture of Te Ao Mārama, the South Atrium makeover by Jasmax, FJMT and designTRIBE at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

A new order • Chris Barton contemplates the new column-fins of Te Ao Mārama’s design, and their connection to the nautilus shell spiral and the golden mean.

Exit at the hokohoko • Amanda Harkness visits Te Ao Mārama’s retail and hospitality offerings, designed by Ignite in association with Studio Pasifika, and Jack McKinney Architects, and finds evidence of artful adaptation and reuse.

Volcanic dome • Bill McKay is transported to ancient Rome as he explores the curvilinear market place of Foodstuffs’ North Island HQ by Monk Mackenzie.

Whare meets verandah • In the Hihiaua Cultural Centre by Moller Architects, Mike Austin finds an example of modest, bicultural architecture, which is well-grounded in the local.

Following the whenua • Mark Southcombe visits Parsonson Architects’ Long House in Wellington’s Churton Park and finds a home designed with both landform and landscape in mind.

Crit • Student work, itineraries, books and events
