Make Modern

From the Editor

Waving On • A vibrant rainbow of solid fabrics pieced in a subtle colour gradation, punctuated by bright, white arrows makes for a striking quilt that is sure to brighten up any room.

Quilting for Charity

Nordic Solar Cross • This modern-minimalistic monochrome tablerunner in different high contrast shades of grey is Anke’s textile interpretation of a traditional solar ornament of the Viking people from the 10th century. She found this motif carved in wood in a little chapel at the Ribe Vikinge Center, an open-air museum village in Denmark, and it inspired this project.

All About Colour

Centrepoint • There’s something special about quilts with a simple colour scheme – this one takes two colours that are colour wheel neighbours, and adds a white background to make a stunning quilt. We love this cool colour scheme, but you could easily change the look of the entire quilt by switching the colours out. Glenda has used marbled tone on tone prints, but this would also make a great scrappy quilt.

Crystal Two Hearts

Pivot • With a bright, bold palette, this quilt would make a super fun quilt for Wanyone with a love of geometric shapes and modern design. Perfect for all ages, the pattern includes two design options – with or without white sashing between the blocks – so you can choose the perfect option for you.

Is QuiltCon For You?

Stella del Mare • This clever quilt uses one block that when set on point, creates a secondary design. It’s perfect to showcase shades of a favourite colour paired with a bright background.

Small and Mighty

Pitcher Perfect • Dainty clusters of flowers can step aside, as this modern take on stunning blooms takes centre stage. Large blocks, abstract design, a bold palette and curved piecing come together to make this modern quilt a stand out.

Corinne Sovey

Electric Slide • Bright solids on a black background give this modern quilt an ‘80s vibe. With a three dimensional feel, this quilt is a perfect statement piece for any wall, but would be equally good for snuggling under.

Stitch in the Ditch with Rulers

Rainbow Ladder • If you have lots of fabric scraps (and who doesn’t!) but you’re not quite sure about full-on scrappy quilts, this is the project for you. Tiny scraps make the rainbow strip panel, and the serene blue negative space keeps it from getting too busy.

Jackie Gillies

Feeling Chatty

Creating Great Habits for Quilters

Linking Spiral • Sometimes a quilt design just catches your eye because it seems like it Scan’t possibly just be two dimensional. This is one of those designs – the clever use of foundation paper piecing to create the spirals in some of the blocks creates a pattern that literally jumps off the fabric.
