African Hunting Gazette

Vol 29 - Issue 2
Magazine

Our Objective is simple and clear - to promote hunting in Africa. And everything we do, focuses on this central mission. We believe that for the passionate hunters they are either hunting, or spend their time wishing they were hunting. This publication helps them get through that time when they are not actually in the bush. Our reader is more committed, more passionate and has tremendous interest in just about everything to do with the African Safari. From cover to cover the AHG brings you everything you need to know about hunting the great continent of Africa. From the southern tip of Africa to the northern reaches of Ethiopia, we go about pursuing our simple and unambiguous objective.

TIME FOR CHANGE! - • The African Hunting Gazette’s Membership Model

Namibia Addresses Wildlife Crime • Wildlife crime continues to evolve. Namibia continues to adapt. As a nation, we possess great pride in our natural resources. When threats to wildlife populations and other environmental resources escalate, we respond to defend our natural heritage. The year 2022 saw the most rhinos poached in our country since 2015, when the first major poaching wave in independent Namibia peaked. We were able to rebut that initial assault, and we are implementing a range of innovative responses to the current spike.

What Do You Do with a WARTHOG IN A CAVE? • This past January 2023 at the DSC Show, I was reunited with my professional hunter, Gamshad Gam, from a memorable Tanzanian Safari, nearly a decade ago. We had not seen each other nor talked since October 2013. As we sat in his booth to catch up on our respective life events, we reminisced about our unforgettable warthog chase. There are some things you just cannot make up! What do you do with a warthog in a cave?

A Safari to REMEMBER • It was a slow and tedious process where each step was carefully taken, and stealth was of utmost importance. After moving quietly in what seemed an eternity, Rhuan and Jackson settled in at the base of a tree where they would be well concealed and could better monitor the activity of the herd. With the thick bush and the herd being wary, this cat- and-mouse game seemed like it could go on for hours.

Not About the Kill • Could a safari start any worse?

Fourth LEOPARD at eighty • The leopard cannot be seen if he does not want to be seen, and that makes hunting him the perfect hunt. If you want a realistic chance to shoot a leopard, you must make him come to you, which means hunting over bait, or following a pack of hounds.

Plains Game, Guns, & Gear: Field Notes from the Kalahari • Africa, the Dark Continent has been the focus of adventure and conflict for centuries. It is hard for me to explain, but it has been a fascination for me for a lifetime. It is said that once you have set foot in Africa, the yearning to be back there can never be satisfied… some claim Africa captures the soul.

ROOIHARTBEES in the Wind

3 Friends for AFRICA • I’ve had the privilege and good fortune now to hunt in Africa four times now. I’ve had numerous discussions with good friend Richard Lendrum (the editor for African Hunting Gazette) about talking to people about going to Africa and what a great adventure it can be. I talk to people, both hunters and photographers alike almost on a daily basis on how economically they can make that trip happen. It’s one of the greatest adventures a person can experience.

The hazard of hunting HIPPOS • National Parks had called my dad and me, I was only sixteen at the time, to come to shoot a problem hippo that was eating the crops of the villagers and chasing them when they tried to drive it out of their fields. So, early one Sunday morning, we loaded up the rifles, the knives, and the shooting sticks and hit the road.
