African Hunting Gazette

Spring 2021
Magazine

Our Objective is simple and clear - to promote hunting in Africa. And everything we do, focuses on this central mission. We believe that for the passionate hunters they are either hunting, or spend their time wishing they were hunting. This publication helps them get through that time when they are not actually in the bush. Our reader is more committed, more passionate and has tremendous interest in just about everything to do with the African Safari. From cover to cover the AHG brings you everything you need to know about hunting the great continent of Africa. From the southern tip of Africa to the northern reaches of Ethiopia, we go about pursuing our simple and unambiguous objective.

What Africans Want for their Wildlife and Biodiversity

Grey Rhebok • Based on Chris and Mathilde Stuart’s book, "Game Animals of the World," published by African Hunting Gazette, here’s everything hunters need to know about the Grey Rhebok

BUFFALO HUNTING … more than half of my life • "You may kill the buffalo easily with one bullet, but if you don’t, the next fourteen .470s serve mostly as a minor irritant." Robert Roark: “Use Enough Gun”

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE MANNLICHER-SCHÖNAUER

Perspectives on HUNTING AFRICA • My wife and I had just returned from month hunting in Zambia where she was successful in shooting a massive old male lion which is currently ranked by SCI as #1 for a woman. She was able to take a 14’crocodile, a grysbok and a Cookson wildebeest. Because of COVID-19, getting there was an experience!

The Very Best of Namibia

With a Handgun for Buffalo… • I have been in the firearms industry for over 30 years and traveled to many of the world’s biggest firearm shows like the “Shot Show” in the USA and the IWA show in Germany, and met many outstanding firearms dealers, ammunition manufacturers, knife makers and the accessory guys. One of them was Wayne Baker, founder of Freedom Arms.

Happy Wives and the Fifty-Seventh Piggy • It was January 2007. We had been visiting our oldest daughter and her family in the Kansas City area, and Sunday afternoon found me at a hunting/fishing/camping expo. As I sauntered down an aisle, I heard someone call out, “Hey Bigfoot”! I recognized the voice of Jan Dirkse Dorfling, the PH and outfitter of the South Africa hunt I made in July 2002 with hunting partner Don Kaberna and our wives. Because of my size 16 shoes, Dirk had affectionately named me Bigfoot. I spotted Dirk up ahead.

Before the Lockdown: A Last-Minute Cape Buffalo • Karoo hoping to shoot a Cape buffalo.

ROGUE Bulls • It was first light, stillness in the air, the quiet of Africa before it wakens in the early morning twilight. The flapping of wings overhead as a crane is heading for the nearest waterhole breaks the tranquility of the cool morning. The mist slowly dissipates, revealing a cloudless blue sky and promises of another adventure hunting buffalo.

A Winning BID! • I have just returned home from my hunting safari with Trompettersfontein Safaris in the bushveld of the South African Limpopo valley. My experience was exceptional! I was hooked on Africa and already planning on going again.

On the hunt

Beware the ALPHA-GAL!

SUNI QUEST with bow and arrow • Hunting in Africa with bow and arrow or a rifle, or whatever weapon you legally choose, very easily becomes addictive. Seventeen years ago after my first African safari, that is what happened to me. In continuing my pursuit of the pygmy antelopes, and after several bowhunting adventures over a couple of years on six of the...
