Letter from the director

Mario Testino • High Photography

Portraying a CHALLENGE • Dan Winters’ (Ventura County, 59) fascination with photography began when he was just a child. A family friend had served as a photojournalist in the Vietnam War and young Dan watched the development process in his darkroom with fascination. “It was, and still is, like magic to me,” says the man who, a few decades later, would become one of the most acclaimed photographers of our time. With more than a hundred awards behind him and five books published, his portraits of great figures from the world of cinema, music or politics, from Angelina Jolie to Barack Obama, make his lens an honest and gimmick-free pupil with which to contemplate the icons of celebrity culture. Today, Winters is pleased to have been able to devote his entire life to his greatest passion. Or, as he himself would say, to continue making magic.

FLYING FROM THE SIDELINES • Alberto García-Alix is as expressive when speaking as when photographing. The man who managed to put his peculiar idiosyncrasy to his advantage with a subversive aesthetic (in its essence, but not in its intention), uncomfortable and iconoclastic at the beginning of the very free decade of the 80s, answers our questions gladly from his cozy studio in Tetuán, between cuddles and caresses to his cat Colilla, the other protagonist of the conversation. He greets us warmly and starts talking, with long pauses between sentences, loosely threading memories and reflections. His singular use of speech reveals itself to be tremendously idiosyncratic, a manner of speaking that is also the fruit of an era, an atmosphere, and certain groups of people. He links each sentence to the next with an “and”, and the conjunction accentuates the condition of narration, of experience, of concatenation, of history, because everything in Alix is living history. His organic nature is such that it turns the editing work inherent to that genre that is the interview into the number one enemy of spontaneity, of authenticity, into a relentless obstacle that hinders expression. And neither he nor I like the cut-offs, so I keep it in a drawer for when it might come in handy.

The melancholic BEAUTY of a GIANT • Not even the technical limitations of the video call disguise a physical presence almost as imposing as the success of its protagonist. Joep Beving, a 46-year-old pianist and composer, sits in front of the camera boasting an ingovernable beard, wild hair and a height of more than six feet. “Because I’m very tall I have to get into a tricky posture to be able to play, so I try to strengthen my stance by going swimming, ” confesses the Dutchman who became the big sensation of contemporary classical streaming in 2015. His music has broken stereotypes and borders, attracting new generations of audiences and surpassing 500 million streams across digital platforms. Numbers that will be increased with Hermetism, an album composed during the pandemic months and with which, pulling minimalism and melancholy, the giant will continue his tireless search for beauty.
