Editorial BEAT introduces itself

MODULAR RACKS A NEW SYNTH EVERY DAY GET STARTED IN 10 MINUTES • Modular gear is no longer a “fiddly topic for nerds”, but can now be found as hardware and software in most studios – with and without a rack. So it‘s time for the ultimate overview! In the extensive special, we show what is important when buying a case, answer the most important and frequently asked questions about modules and systems, talk to innovative manufacturers and YouTubers, test current must-have modules and give you the best patch ideas to download.

The right place for your modules • When entering the Eurorack world, you can‘t avoid choosing a case. But where to start? There are so many different options! We will introduce you to some questions that will help you make a decision and give examples of recommendations that we believe have proven to be effective. In our table you will find a selection of solid, valuable cases that can be a good starting point depending on your intended use and preference.

Finally: The modular no-brainer as a plug-in! • Anyone who has ever dealt with modulars on the computer will have stumbled across the free VCV Rack, among other things. The open-source software shines with a huge community, which reproduces pretty much every module available „in real life“. So everything for free? Yes, but unfortunately only as a standalone app instead of a plug-in. Until now, because a few resourceful developers have just programmed Cardinal-Synth, a version that offers almost everything VCV can do as a plug-in for Windows, macOS and Linux.

How do I mix live sets in the rack? • Although there are now all sorts of all-rounders in modular form, one factor counts, especially for live performances: direct access. Accordingly, a few modules quickly come together that need to be routed somewhere and mixed. And effects like reverb and delay are also needed. Oh yeah, recording the set would be cool too, right? We have a recommendation for you!

A new synth every day • We’ve never done this before: Uually we hold interviews with one or two people, but this time the makers of Doepfer, Vermona, Erica, OXI Instruments, Noise Engineering, Qu-Bit and Tiptop Audio came together at our round table, where we talked about modular hypes, crazy ideas and nothing less than the future of modular systems. So, grab a coffee and enjoy the next few pages to the full. There‘s not only a lot to read, but also a lot to discover!

12 Questions to Cary Crank • It‘s always refreshing to see how others set up and work in their studios. After our call on Facebook, we were overwhelmed with responses; and that‘s a good thing. So, it quickly became clear that we would turn it into a series to inspire and share with everyone. This month we‘re featuring Cary Crank and a clear opinion on the G.A.S..
