The story behind the story
The hot Goss • This is unquestionably the hottest John Goss Special – and not just because it was Gossy’s personal ride back in 1975. It’s an XB Hardtop with deep and lasting connections to John Goss Racing; there’s no other JGS Falcon that’s the authentic real deal like this one.
‘70s supertest A9X -vs- Z1-R • What was the fastest thing on the road in 1978? Modern Motor mag decided to find out by pitting a Torana A9X against a Kawasaki Z1000 Z1-R – which at the time was the world’s quickest motorcycle. The A9X used in the test not only survives to this day but it shares a garage with a Z1-R just like the bike the Torana took on a quarter of a century ago.
Phil Brock mud, dirt and Chargers • If your surname is Brock, you are automatically linked to the Holden brand. Peter Brock’s younger brother, Phil, did race his share of Holdens, but he also had an association with Chrysler Chargers – on both the dirt and mud of rallycross and the bitumen of circuit racing, including Bathurst.
Tales from the factory floor • Back in the mid Eighties, Goodyear needed to do something ‘sexy’ to promote the company’s tyres. By this time, Mike Breen had left Leyland where he had helped create the Barclays TR7 Pro-Car Series and had joined Goodyear as PR co-ordinator. The solution seemed obvious.

Historic Heroes • A selection of Heritage Touring Car, Group N Touring Car and Group S Sports Car action from the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association’s King’s Birthday long weekend Sydney Classic race meeting at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Thommo! Part 2 • Bryan Thomson walked away from racing at the height of his fame in 1975. He had taken lengthy breaks in the past to concentrate on business and earn enough to fund his next car, but this time it was meant to be a proper retirement. However, he was soon back in the sport up to his elbows and, as we explain in Part 2 of his career retrospective, with further fascinating projects...
Before the Hemi Slant Six and V8 Mopar stars of the ‘60s • The Hemi might be the hero engine in Chrysler Australia’s racing history, but the 225cid ‘Slant Six’ that came before it was a formidable performer. Not only was the Slant Six vastly more powerful than its Holden and Ford six-cylinder opposition when released in the early ‘60s, but Chrysler was also the first local manufacturer with an affordable V8 offering.
The Phantom Phase II • Any original Falcon GTHO is special. But this beautifully preserved XW GTHO Phase II is extra special. And the reason it’s special is because of the peculiar mystery that surrounds this car, along with a small handful of other ‘phantom’ Phase IIs that don’t show up Ford’s factory production records.
The days of the ‘Reagh • Initially a barely used emergency aircraft landing strip, the asphalt at Sydney’s Castlereagh became the core of Australian drag racing for 20 years.
