Redemption 1974 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 • The 1973 Bathurst 1000 was the race that got away for John Goss and Kevin Bartlett in their XA Falcon GT Hardtop. Their strong showing should have been a springboard to a successful 1974 season but, due to a number of factors, it didn’t turn out that way – at least not until later in the year when time came for the Great Race. This is the story of Goss and Bartlett’s challenging 1974 season, which would culminate in a surprise against-the-odds win in a wet and wild Bathurst 1000.
A 1974 snapshot • It was the wettest-yet Great Race at Bathurst, and it featured the most dramatic finish in the race’s history to that point as Kevin Bartlett held out Bob Forbes in conditions that these days probably would have prompted a red flag. Here’s a snapshot of the epic encounter that was the 1974 Hardie-Ferodo 1000.
Plum Dinger poster child • It’s a ‘plumb dinger’ of a colour, and in 1970 it was the perfect hue for Holden to show the world its brand new LC Torana GTR XU-1.
Bondy’s Beast • Rally cars have to be tough, and there’s surely none tougher than the HDT’s Torana L34 rally car – it’s survived 30-odd years of rallying, tarmac rallying and even circuit racing.
The legend Part 1 • Legends don’t come more legendary than this. Dick Johnson has done it all but retains the ‘everyman’ persona and humility that has endeared him to fans all over the country. Three Bathurst wins and five touring car titles don’t begin to explain his iconic standing in the sport. In this career retrospective, he talks us through his long and winding road to the top.
Chiko rolled • Without the usual Safety Cars, Bathurst in 2024 was a real race for a change. We got to see the true pace of the cars and their drivers – and there was no doubt as to who deserved to win it.
Leyland P76 V8 Australia’s aluminium F5000 champion • How race ace John McCormack and Repco developed the humble P76 V8 into a race engine to take on the world’s best 5.0-litre Chev and Holden V8s in Formula 5000 racing.
