a slownews day... half a century ago • A slow news day and a politician with a penchant for being in the news was all it took to kill off what might well have proven to be the greatest Aussie muscle cars of all time. Half a century on, AMC reflects on this infamous chapter in Australian history, the sorry saga forever to be known as the great Supercar Scare.
Holden’s stillbornSupercar Holden Torana LJ XU 1 V8 • The Torana XU-1 was a dynamic little package with a potent performance punch, but it was found wanting against the might of the GTHO Phase III. The only solution, as far as HDT boss Harry Firth was concerned, was to fight fire with fire and drop a V8 under the bonnet.
A 4.8-litre six-cylinder XU-1?
Jack’s back • It wasn’t famous or hugely successful but 40-plus years on this just-restored machine is an important addition to the historic touring car racing scene – a rare surviving genuine Group C racing Valiant Charger.
Family heirloom • When it comes to restoring old Falcons from the ‘60s and ‘70s, the emphasis of course is on the GT models. So it’s pleasing to see that a ‘lesser’ car from that era has been beautifully restored – a 1972 XA Fairmont GS sedan with a long history in the family with which it still resides.

Q and A
SydneyClassic • Images from the HSRCA Sydney Classic, Eastern Creek’s annual June Historic race meeting, which this year featured touring cars - including the growing historic V8 Supercars category.
Seventy and still strong • The Australian Racing Drivers’ Club was a pivotal player in the revival and development of motorsport in NSW after the second world war. Later, its stewardship of the annual Bathurst 500/1000 over more than 30 years helped consolidate that iconic race and the professional Supercars category we enjoy today. As this grand old club celebrates 70 years, AMC reflects on the long history of the ARDC.

Labour of love • If you are a couple planning on eloping, what better mode of transport for that ultimate romantic getaway could there be than a Holden Sandman van? And this beautifully turned out HX Sandman not only won the bride’s heart, but also the 2021 Van Nationals in Parkes at the same time…
