A race like no other • It’s 40 years since the 1984 James Hardie 1000 – a race that proved a turning point for the sport and the event. AMC takes a deep dive into the 25th running of the Great Race to take a fresh look at one of the biggest Bathursts of all time.
Failure to launch • The start to the ‘Last of the Big Bangers’ Bathurst was a highly anticipated affair – although no one could have predicted the drama that would unfold moments after they dropped the national flag.
Walkinshaw’s false start • Tom Walkinshaw’s first Bathurst was over before it started. It was an early and abrupt end to what potentially could have been a major upset result for the John Goss Jaguar XJS.
Dream day • Barry Lawrence hit the jackpot on Sunday September 30, 1984, putting disastrous 1982 and 1983 Bathurst campaigns behind him to be the top privateer.
The 40-year reunion • What better way to mark the 40th anniversary of the Big Banger Bathurst than with an old school reunion that rights a wrong.
Night Charger • Two Wheels magazine journos, a brand new E38 Charger, and a road trip from Adelaide to Sydney – back in the days of no speed limits on the open highways. Once they were safely back in Sydney, the Charger was put up as first prize in a readers’ competition in the mag – and it was won by a schoolboy!
The odd couple • Cotter and Doulman – it sounds like a suburban law firm. Indeed, John Cotter was a solicitor and Peter Doulman a mechanical engineer. Two university graduates seem an unlikely duo to tackle the Great Race, and yet they achieved a record-breaking 12 consecutive starts between 1989 and 2000, initially in BMW M3s and then VS/VT Commodores.
Project Brut 33 • Everyone remembers Allan Moffat’s famous ‘Project B52’ Falcon GT for that spectacular ’74 Bathurst Brut 33 livery. But for Moffat fan Bruce Thomas, the more modest colour scheme it ran on ‘debut’ at Sandown – where it won – looked even better. It’s this largely forgotten livery that he chose for his personal trackday Moffat tribute XB Hardtop.
