Wiltshire Life

Goodbye to all that as we bow out with pride • Mark Allen, the owner and editor-in-chief of Wiltshire Life, explains why he is calling time on a magazine that has been around for nearly 78 years.

Fond farewell • Sarah Rose Troughton is The King’s representative here in Wiltshire, supporting members of the Royal Family on visits to the county. As Lord-Lieutenant, she also supports businesses, charities, schools and organisations, raising Wiltshire’s profile and its people well beyond the border. Here she says goodbye to our county magazine.

Find your festival spirit • Music, dance, history, jazz, theatre, literature, and carnival. Round-up of county festivals

Paul Martin • The television presenter and antiques expert takes time out to reflect on his love of the county

Sophie Conran • Design and creativity run through the veins of the Conran family, so it is no wonder that at the heart of Sophie’s home in Wroughton, passion for detail and style runs through the fabric of her Georgian house. Mary-Vere Parr went along to meet her.

Every picture tells a story • Hilary Stock is a fine art photographer with a background in making radio documentaries. She understands how to tell a story, although her focus is now on images rather than the spoken word. Mary-Vere Parr went along to meet her.

Ones to watch • Wiltshire has always produced more than its fair share of talent, be that in the spheres of business, sport or the arts and the next generation looks just as promising as any that have gone before. Gary Lawrence looks at five names to look out for in 2024 and beyond.

Queen highlights wonderful work at women’s refuge • Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service has been helping support those fleeing abusive relationships for 50 years. Its lifesaving work was recognised by Her Majesty Queen Camilla when she paid its refuge in Swindon a visit. Eleanor Butler reports.

It’s all fair play for fireman Sam • Firefighter Sam Allison fulfilled a dream when he took charge of his first Premiership game days before being honoured by The King. Gary Lawrence looks at his extraordinary success.

Firmly Planted in the nature of business • A south Wiltshire couple has established an events and marketing business putting nature and sustainability at its core. Mary Vere-Parr went along to meet them and discover more about their unique venture.

With you through the years • For decades Wiltshire Life has been at the heart of the county. Through its pages we have been privileged to share the compelling and extraordinary stories of its people, places, past, present and future.

Royal visitors • In this final issue, we look back at Royal Family visits to the county through this selection of front covers. Wiltshire Life has been proud to share these memorable occassions over the decades.

Georgie Green, then and now… • In 1998 I was working for the BBC in their studios on Bridge Street in Salisbury when I was asked to write My Wiltshire. Here are my words from 26 years ago, if anything, my love for this county has only grown over time.
