Gospel canticles • The gospel canticles (or “songs”) come from Luke's gospel. In honor of the mystery of the Incarnation (to which all three refer), it is customary to make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins and to stand while it is sung.

The Spirit in the middle

New life in the Spirit • St. Irenaeus (c. 130–c. 202) was born in Smyrna (in modern-day Turkey) and became bishop of Lyons, France. This excerpt, from his work Against Heresies, includes beautiful imagery of the Holy Spirit and an allegorical interpretation of the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate the roles of the persons of the Holy Trinity.
