Living with Christ
“God shed his grace on thee”
The pope’s intention for July
Prayer in the morning
Gospel canticles • The gospel canticles (or “songs”) come from Luke’s gospel. In honor of the mystery of the Incarnation (to which all three refer), it is customary to make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins and to stand while it is sung.
Prayer in the evening

Who God might send
To serve the poor is to serve Jesus • St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660), born in France, was ordained a priest at the age of 19 and was widely sought after as a confessor and spiritual director. He founded the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) in 1625 and, with St. Louise de Marillac, founded the Daughters of Charity in 1633. St. Vincent readily assisted abandoned children, prisoners, refugees, and the homebound. He gave alms to the poor but also said: “Charity does not consist only of distributing alms but helping the poor to regain their dignity and independence.” The following words are taken from one of his letters.
Family love • Find a quiet spot to read, reflect, and pray. You may record your thoughts in a prayer journal, or share your responses with others in a group.
Questions Jesus asks • Stephen J. Binz, in his Threshold Bible Study series from Twenty-Third Publications, has created a compelling program designed for individuals or groups. The series is designed to lead participants through a new doorway of biblical awareness and accompany them across a unique threshold of understanding. The characters, places, and images that readers encounter will help them to explore fresh dimensions of their faith and discover richer insights for their spiritual life. We hope you enjoy the following excerpt.
