CROWDS FLOCK TO MIDLANDS MODEL ENGINEERING EXHIBITION • Certainly back to its best was the 2023 Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition held on 12-15 October at the Warwickshire Event Centre, Leamington Spa. The editor called in for a few hours on Thursday lunchtime where a huge crowd was seen at this traditional four-day event.

MARSHALL’S 175 AT HADDENHAM • Ian Palmer takes a look at the superb Marshall anniversary display at Haddenham on 16-17 September.

A STEAM ROLLER CALLED HENGIST • According to legend Hengist and Horsa were Anglo-Saxon brothers who landed at Ebbsfleet on the Isle of Thanet around 450AD to serve as mercenaries for Vortigern, the king of the Britons. Horsa was killed in battle but his younger brother Hengist survived to become the first in a long line of kings of Kent, says Dave Vaughan.

MINIATURES LET OFF STEAM AT CHESTER-LE-STREET • The Chester-Le-Street Steam & Vintage Rally took place in early July, on the Lambton Estate beside the River Wear near the town of Chester-le-Street. It attracted a great selection of vehicles from commercials to cars and motorbikes. But as the name suggests, this is primarily a steam show, with a variety of full-sized engines to enjoy, while a great selection of miniatures was also to be seen, with the Burrell name certainly dominating proceedings. David Reed made the trip to see the action.

TRAM & FORDS AT BEAMISH • David Reed visited Beamish’s two-day April steam gala, where besides the steamers the trams, omnibuses and Fords were very popular.

39TH RIDGEWAY RUN 2023 • Each year the Historic Commercial Vehicles Society (South Midlands) hold a well-supported road run from Henley-on-Thames to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton. It gets its name from the ancient Ridgeway of the Chiltern Hills which it crosses. Dick Bodily went along to see the action.
