MR RELIABLE PART 1 • They might look nothing special, but the most popular make of steam tractor was Aveling & Porter, principally because many were built as convertible steam rollers, which gave the make more flexibility compared to all other steam tractor manufacturers, particularly as time went on. In Part One we take a look at Aveling tractors prior to the piston-valve era.

BACK FROM THE GRAVE PART 2 • Old Glory reveals the amazing story of Peter Watkin’s Marshall traction engine No. 46478, that was stripped to pieces in the 1960s and left for dead on a West Country hillside. It was left uncovered to fade away, at least that’s what some thought. However, before we get there, we look at other things along the way regarding this very affable person who is also a skilled and practical engineer.

WORKING TIMES

KING ALFRED TAKES TO THE ROADS OF HAMPSHIRE • Since the 1980s it has been a tradition in the beautiful cathedral city of Winchester to hold a bus running day, says Dave Vaughan.

THE MINIATURE ENGINE CONNECTION OF WT PALMER OF THURMASTON - ROAD ROLLING CONTRACTORS – PART 2 • Bill Palmer founded the firm of WT Palmer & Co, Road Rolling Contractors of Thurmaston in Leicestershire in 1935. It eventually became Road Rollers Ltd. In Part 1, which appeared in OG 408, the story of the company was outlined up to the point of Bill’s retirement from the firm in 1961. Derek Rayner takes up the story from that point.

AMBERLEY CHALK PITS MUSEUM • After another highly successful steam show weekend at Amberley Museum the opportunity was taken by David Williams to hold a photographic day with some of the engines that participated in the weekend’s rally. Simon Colbeck went along and reports that the superb collection of transport-related buildings at the museum provided a perfect backdrop for the participating road steam exhibits.

PLYM VALLEY TRANSPORT WEEKEND

THE GREAT REMPSTONE STEAM & COUNTRY SHOW • Showers and storms couldn’t dampen the spirits of the crowds visiting one of the longest running events on the rally scene, The Great Rempstone Steam & Country Show held on 8-9 July.

CLAYTON WAGON STARS AT PARHAM • Sussex Steam Shows Ltd rallies have been taking place since 2008, and last year’s was held for the second time at Parham Park near Pulborough in West Sussex over 8-9 July.

AUTUMN ON THE WELSH NARROW GAUGE • With the prospect of three double Fairlies working on the Ffestiniog Railway, the traditional autumn photographers charters were an opportunity not to be missed in 2023, writes Simon Colbeck.

ON THE ROAD P1 • Allan Bedford looks at ‘The American Invasion 1914-20’ as US commercials arrived in the UK during the First World War.

ART DÉCO ELEGANCE – 1949 DENNIS LANCET III • In...
