Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. 지금 여기 필요한 것: 건축사사무소 김남 Necessary for the Here and Now: KimNam Architects • 내가 지은 건물에서 생활할 사람들의 아침과 저녁을 생각하는 일. 낡아가는 건물의 나이 듦을 챙기는 일. “어제 옳은 것이 오늘 틀릴 수 있다”고 말하는 김진휴와 남호진(건축사사무소 김남 공동대표)은 현재의 조건과 언젠가 닥쳐올 미래를 줄다리기하며 마지막까지 도면을 매만진다. 재료의 부식과 오염을 줄이기 위해, 한 뼘이라도 여유로운 실내 공간을 더 확보하기 위해, 아이들이 비에 젖지 않고 몸을 피할 수 있는 긴 처마를 내어주기 위해서다. 난이도 있는 구조를 시도하고 플래싱, 물끊기, 선홈통 같은 디테일의 완성도를 높여 안온한 삶에 이르게 하는 것. 두 사람의 고된 수행의 과정은 그렇게 “지금 여기 필요한 것”을 제시한다. A task that involves thinking about the mornings and evenings of the those who will live in the buildings I design. A task that involves taking care of buildings as they age. ‘What was right yesterday may be wrong today,’ say Kim Jinhyu and Nam Hojin (co-principals, KimNam Architects), as they tweak and tidy up the drawings right up to the last minute, playing a tug-of-war between present conditions and the future that will one day arrive. This is to reduce corrosion and contamination of the chosen materials, to ensure that the interior space can accommodate as much space as possible, even if it is only one handspan wider, and to provide long eaves for the children to shelter from the rain. The painstaking process of the two people’s practice presents ‘what is necessary for the here and now’ as they attempt a difficult structure and raise the degree of completion of details such as flashing, drip edge, and rainwater pipe, ultimately leading to a peaceful and comportable life.
