‘DRIVE-AWAY SALE’ SAVES A LIFE

PURE LUXURY • Imagine the boat you might have if you could order up whatever you wanted: custom built, finished to the highest standards, every luxury and comfort you can specify…

Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 • Boating NZ’s Andrew Howard was in the South of France with his partner Cary at the same time as the Cannes Yachting Festival, so naturally we asked them to pop over and take a look.

CAPTAINS WELCOME • Kevin Johnson and his new partner Sarah run the Christchurch-based electrical appliance testing business Mega Test. As part of the business, Kevin tests and certifies shore leads and electrical systems for boaties, issuing them with a Test Tag, which is required by many marinas before vessels can connect to shore power.

LEADING THE CHARGE! • I remember being impressed by the ride the last time I reviewed a Challenger boat, which was 15 years ago or more. And after trying the latest, revamped, 720HT, I’m still impressed.

BOATBLING

UP THE WAHS! • It’s an overlooked, quiet, and quite-beautiful waterway right close – surprisingly so – to Auckland. Me old shipmate Tony and I decided to go take a better look at the Weiti River from Stillwater to Silverdale, while other yachts and launches sailed right past it.

Honda joins the V8 Club • The Honda BF350 is an all-new, five-litre, V8 outboard – the first V8 for Honda Marine.

Downsize for more fun (PART 1 OF 2) • The day I chose to go smaller with my soft-baits turned out to be a turning point in my fishing life.

MAYDAY IN THE DARK • AS EXPERIENCED BY JEROME & JACKIE HOITINCK ON ANTARES HYBRID 4469, LONNA

IT’S REALLY VERY HARD TO PUSH-START A BOAT • It is a really good idea to have a spare starter & alternator, especially if you only have one engine. Make the difference between a great day, or disaster and a Coastguard rescue! Nothing spoils summer’s first cruise quite like the hollow ‘click’ when you turn the key. Likely causes include a sickly alternator and/or starter motor. Auckland’s Auto Electrical Spares (AES) specialises in bringing these lonely, unloved items back to health.

Marina construction challenges • Marina expansions, while exciting for berth holders, often come with challenges.

Ski-boat racers • This started out as a piece about venturing more seriously into the powerboat racing, but I quickly realised that even most dedicated race setups still function perfectly well for weekend work.

Weather delays and water woes • A couple of weeks before the September 2023 school holidays, Kirsten planned our anticipated two-week sail. We’ve never sailed north of Kawau Island, and weather permitting, we’d decided to journey up to the Bay of Islands.

BREAKING the MOULD • The Book of Ecclesiastes tries to tell us that there is “nothing new under the sun.” As a boat reviewer, I often find this...
