ELCO STILL TRAILBLAZING AT 130

EXPLORE TO THE MAX • The Aldermen Islands boast some of New Zealand’s most spectacular maritime scenery: sheer rock stacks and needle-like spires, soaring sea cliffs and secluded picture-perfect coves bathed in turquoise blue water. What better place to review a stylish new powerboat?

LIGHTING THE WAY • The lights are back on, marking the channel into Ngunguru in Northland. We were going to sail up to this creek to fetch our Ukrainian shipmates Sergei and Tonya, but the river mouth looked blocked by a sandbar.

Leaders for kingfish –Part II • Catching a decent kingfish is a dream for many anglers – and once you feel that immense power through the rod and line you’ll understand why!

A FINE FILLY • It is always inspiring to meet people who are passionate about what they are doing. For Dave Miller and friend Richard ‘Dick’ Marquand, their passion is saltwater flyfishing, and Dave’s boat – a Tristram 600 Cabriolet called Filly – is set up accordingly.

Clean Clubs for the future • Driving environmental awareness — first at her local club, and then on a nationwide scale —has brought rewards for Delayne Salthouse, who has recently been recognised for her role in helping Kiwi yacht clubs become more sustainable.

SHAKEN & STIRRED • A rare piece of 007 memorabilia triumphed at this year’s Antique & Classic Boat Show at St Arnaud’s Lake Rotoiti, with a high-octane 16’ ski-boat used in the 1979 Bond movie Moonraker receiving the Jens Hansen Cup for the Best Vessel Overall.

BOAT BLING

Puerto Rico to Panama • In the last issue, Tom and Harriet had made it as far as Puerto Rico – two hops out of three on their way to Panama and the Pacific Ocean. This issue they reach Panama, where there are unexpected delays…

THE OCEAN WANDERER • With the launch of the E6 — the new flagship of Elan Yachts’ E-Line range, and the largest and most high-performance cruiser the yard has produced to date — the Slovenian builder has set its sights firmly on owners who want speed as well as style.

Ron Given 1937 – 2023 • The marine industry, and particularly multihull enthusiasts, were saddened to hear that designer Ron Given recently passed away in Noumea. Given was a passionate, enthusiastic, skilled and knowledgeable yacht designer.
