ULTIMATE FISHER! • Estero is an Innovision 808 with a twist. Built for a sport fishing enthusiast, the Venture model has a centre cabin (CC) with full walkaround side-decks, rather than the conventional hardtop of the standard 808, a layout optimised for fishing and diving.

John Street MNZM REMEMBERED 1936 to 2023 • The New Zealand marine industry was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Street on December 21, 2023. A giant of a man in all respects, his contribution to the maritime industry for over 60 years was unique and unprecedented.

PAINTING POWER • Could sun-sensitive paints replace old school solar panels to give electric boats and cars unlimited range?

WINDOWS TOO!

In the MOOD • There’s something special about cruising on a yacht: the smooth motion under sail, the gentle lapping of the water, the feeling that you’ve earned your afternoon G&T by engaging in mild physical activity. And then there are the pleasures of cruising on a launch: an elevated saloon with wide views, plenty of storage and the ability to get where you want to go without being on a lean.

BOAT BLING

Engine height • Engine height is critical for getting the most from any given boat setup – social, pleasure or race. Put simply, the higher the engine the lower the drag. The lower the drag the less resistance and the higher potential for yield of speed gains.

CHERRY ON TOP • We did it tough to file this story, beating a hundred miles each way in stern breezes. But it was well worth it; for this is an Up the Creek adventure with everything, plus a cherry (a golden one) on top!

Deploy the drogue • Dragging a reliable, suitably-sized drogue slows the boat’s drift, making lure presentation easier and much more effective. A drogue can also offer advantages when fishing at anchor.

CREATED CONTENT • Organisers of the Auckland Wooden Boat Festival (1-3 March, Wynyard Quarter) are pulling out all the stops to create an extravaganza of anything and everything related to wooden boats.

KEEPING it WILD • Family Boats introduces the Lazercat 950, the first twin-hulled design from aluminium trailerboat manufacturer Lazercraft. This powercat is such a departure from Lazercraft’s previous models it gets a whole new name: Lazercat.

RESCUE MISSION • One of New Zealand’s oldest search and rescue institutions, Sumner Lifeboat/Coastguard Sumner is celebrating 125 years of outstanding service.

Racing to Whangamata • As we kissed our keel ever so slightly on the sandbar the pit of my stomach sank. Had our luck run out at the last possible moment? How did we get to this unenviable point in our journey? Well, we have to rewind a couple of days.

Time to burn! • Time to burn is the phrase you see on the SailGP race starts, which tells the driver how much time they need to ‘wash off’ (lose) if they want to start the race bang on the gun.

Covering the sole FLOORING DECISIONS AND APPLICATION • One of the last major interior decorating decisions I...
